Our favorite part of summer is the sweet, juicy mouthwatering flavors of mango. Or maybe it’s fresh peaches. Or a big basket of strawberries. Actually, it’s pretty much all sunny-day fruit.
Next time you check out your local produce section or your nearby farmer’s market, be sure to have these handy tips in your arsenal to best determine when those mangoes are ripe and ready for eating!
1. It should be soft but not squishy. If it’s too hard and unyielding, then it’s not ripe enough to eat. Of course, it shouldn’t be mushy, either.
3. It should have some wrinkles. The surface of the mango should have some light wrinkles. Deep, prominent wrinkles are indicators of an overripe mango. However, some other varieties don’t show wrinkles as a sign of ripeness, so be sure to note the four other telltale signs of ripeness.
4. Make the sure the flesh around the stem is plump. Before a mango ripens, the stem end will be fairly flat. Once the mango matures, it should be so plump inside that the stem end rises slightly.
5. It has some speckles. Brown and occasionally, yellow spots, are also indicators of ripeness. This is a helpful sign in conjunction with the four other tips.
How do you speed up the ripening process? If you end up buying unripe mangoes, store them in a brown paper bag. Better yet, store them with an apple to increase the levels of ethylene, a gas produced by ripening fruit.
